Raising the Banner: Clan Preston Launches Its Official Home

For nearly a millennium, the name Preston has been woven into the landscape of Scotland. You can find it in the stones of Craigmillar Castle, in the parish records of East Lothian, and in the surname carried by descendants across six continents. Today, we take the next step in that long story: the launch of clanpreston.org, the official home of Clan Preston.

A Family Written Into Scotland’s History

The Preston name first appears in Scottish records around the twelfth century. It derives from the Old English preost-tun — the priest’s settlement. From their ancestral seat in Lothian, the Prestons spread across Scotland and beyond.

Their story is one of loyalty to the Scottish Crown, fierce independence, and enduring faith. Today, descendants of the Preston line live on every continent. This registry is the first step toward reuniting them under their ancient banner — and petitioning the Lord Lyon King of Arms for formal recognition as a standing Scottish clan.

Key Dates in Preston History

c.1150 — The Preston family establishes itself in Lothian, Scotland. The name appears in early charters near Prestonpans on the Firth of Forth.

1374 — Sir William Preston acquires Craigmillar Castle near Edinburgh. It becomes the principal seat of the Preston family for two centuries. The castle later passes to the Crown and is used by Mary, Queen of Scots.

1454 — Sir William Preston gifts a relic of the True Cross to St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh. This gesture cements the family’s standing among Scotland’s Catholic nobility.

1563–1567 — Mary, Queen of Scots uses Craigmillar Castle as a retreat and holds council there. The Craigmillar Bond, which plots the fate of Lord Darnley, is believed to have been signed within its walls. Throughout this period, the Prestons remain loyal to the Queen.

17th Century — The Preston family disperses during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Lines spread to Ireland, England, and the American colonies. Many Prestons serve as officers in the Scottish regiments of the period.

18th–19th Century — A great wave of Scottish emigration carries Preston descendants to America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. As a result, the name becomes common across the English-speaking world while retaining its Scottish roots.

2026 — The Clan Preston Registry is established, bringing together descendants worldwide. Our goal is to gather 2,500 registered members and present a formal petition to the Lord Lyon King of Arms for official clan recognition.

A Chronicle of Pride

Our motto, Praesto Ut PraestemI Undertake That Which I Can Perform — speaks to a spirit of striving that has defined generations of Prestons. From the shores of East Lothian to Australia and beyond, ours is a family of remarkable reach and resilience. This site exists to honour that spirit. It also exists to bring the family together across the distances that history has placed between us.

The Mission: Lord Lyon Recognition

Scotland’s heraldic and clan system is governed by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, one of the oldest heraldic offices in the world. To be recognised as an official Standing Clan, a clan must demonstrate a living, organised community of descendants.

Specifically, the Lord Lyon requires a petition signed by at least 2,500 registered clan members. That is exactly what we are building. Every person who registers on this site brings us one step closer to standing alongside Clan Campbell, Clan MacLeod, and the other great Scottish families.

Why Your Registration Matters

Every name added to the Clan Registry is more than a data point. It is a declaration that this family’s history is worth preserving. It says that the thread connecting us to those East Lothian stones has not been lost — and that the name Preston still means something to the people who carry it.

Registration is free and takes only a few minutes. It carries no obligations. You are simply saying: I am here. I am a Preston. I want to be counted.

If you have Preston ancestry — whether through a direct male line, a female line, or a family that carried the name in any generation — we want to hear from you. Variant spellings are welcome. Uncertain lineages are welcome. If you believe you carry Preston blood, the Registry is your home.

Be Part of the Story

Your name belongs in this history. Every Preston who registers strengthens the case for formal recognition. It takes two minutes.
